The Afternoon Outing
After another long morning of working, the last thing I wanted to do was put on a fresh outfit and go out into the freezing cold of winter. But my best friend Jessica was in town for the weekend, and I was determined to see her before she left. So I decided to go for it. It was Friday, after all. And I’m so glad I did.
I bundled up in all of my coziest layers, laced up my favorite Doc Martens and headed out the door. I was supposed to meet Jessica at the Magenta Elephant Café, our favorite spot in the city. Thankfully, it was only a few blocks away from my apartment, so I could walk there in less than 5 minutes.
I pranced down 7th Street clutching my favorite eggplant-colored bag. I felt confident and knew I was looking like my best self. Although it was cold and the middle of January, the bright sun was playing peekaboo so I reached into my bag to pull out the purple aviators that I was constantly getting complimented on. I fumbled around with the contents of my bag before I was able to find my trusted shades.
When I walked into the Magenta Elephant, Jessica and I greeted one another with a hug and some squeals of delight. It had been almost a year since we had last seen each other.
“I love your sunglasses!” she chimed.
I was about to thank her when I looked up to notice she was wearing the exact same ones.
“Thank you so much! I love yours too!” I rang back.
We both had a good laugh and sat down to enjoy some lavender chai tea lattes and blueberry lemon scones- our usual order. From there we started catching up and chatting about life, relationships, and our favorite new hobbies. It wasn’t long before we realized that an hour had passed. That’s the thing about my friendship with Jessica. No matter how long we go without seeing each other, it always feels like we are picking up right where we left off when we finally reunite.
After what must’ve been hours of talking, we finally decided to check out some of the new boutiques in the area. When we got up to leave, I noticed the adorable purple ankle booties Jessica was wearing.
“Oh my gosh!” I said, “I love your booties!”
Jessica looked down and noticed that both of our boots were a similar shade of purple. “We are so synced up…” she replied, “I love it!”
The rest of the afternoon, Jessica and I shared plenty of laughs and made new memories shopping through the boutiques and antique stores throughout the city. As it turns out, we both have a love for all things purple! When the evening came around, we both had more bags than we could carry, so we headed back to my apartment to try on all our new clothes and get ready for a night on the town.
